Computer Aided Technologies (CAD/CAM) and Dentistry

Major Advancements

Recent major advancements in computer aided technologies have allowed for the restoration of teeth in a single visit. Computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) using cutting edge software, 3-D photography, and 3-D printing allow for the construction and placement of teeth restorations in a single visit. Crowns, veneers, onlays, inlays, bridges, and implants can now be placed in one or very few visits, eliminating or reducing the need for uncomfortable temporaries and extra office visits.

Applications to our Practice

Our office uses CEREC CAD/CAM technologies, the leader in computer aided dentistry. The teeth are prepped and photographed with a 3-D camera that links to a the CEREC software. The program then reconstructs the image of the prep and images the surrounding teeth to allow for optimal design and aesthetics. Once the design is finished, the image file is sent to an in-office 3-D printing machine that mills the restoration out of  fine porcelain blocks using diamond burs.

Applications to the Patient

The restoration is fitted to the patient and then painted and cooked in a kiln. The tooth is cemented into place and often very little drilling is needed before the process is finished. The final product is a beautiful restoration of form, function, and beauty, with minimal time and exertion on the patient.
