Types of Dental Implant
Dental implants are not one-size-fits-all, and the right approach depends on how many teeth you are missing and how much healthy bone you have. Dr. Patel will review your imaging and talk through the options so you can choose with confidence. Here are the main ways we use implants at our Honolulu office.
Single-Tooth Implants
One implant topped with a crown replaces a single missing tooth without relying on neighboring teeth for support.
Implant-Supported Bridges
A few implants can anchor a bridge that replaces several teeth in a row.
Implant-Supported Dentures
A handful of implants can secure a full or partial denture so it feels steadier when you eat and speak.
All-on-4 Dentures
Four implants support a full set of teeth, and for many patients this approach can be placed and restored on the same day.
Precision Planning Starts with Digital Imaging
Placing an implant is a delicate process. The post has to sit in an exact position and at a precise angle to give the restoration the stability it needs. To make that possible, Dr. Patel uses digital X-rays and CT scans to create a surgical guide before the procedure ever begins. The guide helps him place each implant more accurately and supports a smoother, more predictable experience. During your consultation, the two of you will review your images and decide which treatments and comfort options suit you best.
Replacing One Tooth, Several, or a Full Arch
Implants are flexible, and the right plan depends on how many teeth are missing and what you want from your restoration. Dr. Patel will recommend the approach that fits your needs and your jawbone. Here are the main ways implants are used.
- A single missing tooth. One implant topped with a crown fills the gap on its own.
- Several missing teeth. A few implants can support a bridge that replaces multiple teeth.
- A full or partial denture. A handful of implants can anchor a denture so it feels more secure.
- All-on-4 dentures. For some patients who need a full set of teeth, this approach uses four implants and can usually be placed and restored on the same day.
Your Implant Journey, One Stage at a Time
Getting a dental implant happens in stages so your mouth has time to heal and we can make sure each step goes well. Your timeline depends on your needs, and Dr. Patel will outline it with you at your first visit. Here is a general look at the process.
01
Consultation and Imaging
Dr. Patel reviews your health history and examines your mouth. Digital X-rays and CT scans show the bone, nearby teeth, and ideal implant position.
02
Designing the Surgical Guide
The guide is prepared before the procedure so the post can be placed at an exact position and angle. We also talk through comfort options, including sedation.
03
Placing the Implant
Dr. Patel places the implant in our office. If a tooth needs to be removed, we may be able to do this at the same visit for qualified patients.
04
Healing and Integration
Over time, the jawbone bonds with the implant and anchors it in place. We check your progress so any concerns are caught early.
05
Attaching the Restoration
Once the implant is ready, your crown, bridge, or denture is fitted. Our in-office CEREC technology can create the restoration for an implant, which can shorten the wait.
How Implants Help Protect the Jawbone
When a tooth is lost, the body slowly begins to reabsorb the bone that once surrounded its root. Over time, this can weaken the jaw and change the way your face looks. Because an implant acts like a tooth root, the body treats it that way, and the surrounding bone is stimulated when you chew. This is one reason Dr. Patel often recommends replacing missing teeth with implants when possible. Acting sooner can also make treatment simpler, since there is more bone to work with.
When Bone Needs a Little Extra Support
Implants need enough healthy bone to hold them securely. If you have been missing a tooth for a long time, the bone in that area may have thinned. Not smoking and keeping your gums healthy also help implants succeed. Dr. Patel reviews your CT scan to see whether you have enough support. If you do not, there are ways to build it up.
- Bone grafting. Additional bone material can be added to strengthen the jaw so it can hold an implant.
- Sinus lift. If an implant in the upper jaw would come close to the sinus cavity, the area can be augmented with extra bone tissue.
