When a Crown Is the Right Solution
Crowns are one of the most widely used dental restorations because they are so versatile. When a tooth is too damaged for a filling to hold up, a crown can protect what remains and restore normal function. Dr. Patel may recommend one in situations like these.
- When a tooth is cracked, worn, or weakened by decay
- To restore a tooth that has a large filling and not enough natural structure left
- To hold a dental bridge in place and replace missing teeth
- To improve the shape, size, or color of a tooth that affects your smile
Types of Dental Crowns We Offer
Not every crown is the same, and the right choice depends on the tooth, your bite, and your goals. We focus on porcelain and ceramic crowns because they combine natural beauty with lasting strength. Dr. Patel will recommend the type that fits your needs after an exam. Here are the options you may hear about at your consultation.
- eMax, BruxZir, and Empress crowns. These porcelain and ceramic options are chosen for beauty, strength, and durability, depending on your needs and preferences.
- CEREC porcelain crowns. Designed on screen and milled from a single block of porcelain in our office, these crowns can often be completed in one visit.
- Crowns for bridges and implants. Crowns can anchor a dental bridge or cover a dental implant, restoring both appearance and function where teeth are missing.
Whichever type you choose, every crown is tinted to match your natural teeth and shaped to fit your bite comfortably.
Crafting Your Crown in a Single Visit
Traditionally, a dental crown took at least two visits, one to measure the tooth and another to place the crown after a dental lab created it, with a temporary crown worn in between. CEREC technology changes that by allowing Dr. Patel to design and craft your crown right here in our Honolulu office. Here is how it works.
01
Exam and Planning
Dr. Patel examines the tooth, reviews any X-rays, and explains why a crown is the right choice. He also discusses the shade and material that will suit your smile best.
02
Preparing the Tooth
Any decay or damaged areas are carefully removed, and the tooth is shaped to hold the crown. We numb the area when needed so you stay comfortable.
03
Taking a Digital Impression
Instead of traditional impression trays, Dr. Patel captures a digital impression of the prepared tooth. This guides the computerized tools that craft your restoration.
04
Designing the Crown
Using CAD/CAM software, Dr. Patel designs the shape, fit, and bite of your crown on screen. His training in this technology helps ensure a precise, natural result.
05
Crafting the Crown
Your crown is milled from a single block of porcelain chosen to match the color of your natural teeth. Because it is made on-site, we can fine-tune it before placement.
06
Placing and Finishing
Dr. Patel permanently bonds the crown in place, checks your bite, and polishes it for a smooth, comfortable finish. In many cases, you leave the same day with a finished crown.
What to Expect After Your Crown Is Placed
Once your crown is bonded in place, you can usually return to your normal routine. The tooth may feel slightly different at first, and that is completely normal as you get used to the new restoration. Dr. Patel will review aftercare with you before you leave, so you know exactly what to expect. Here are a few things patients commonly notice in the first days.
- Mild sensitivity to hot or cold, which typically settles as the tooth adjusts
- A slightly different feel when biting, which usually fades quickly as you get used to the crown
- Some tenderness in the gums around the tooth, which often eases within a short time
- Normal chewing, with Dr. Patel letting you know if any food restrictions apply to your case
If your bite feels uneven, the crown feels loose, or discomfort lingers or gets worse, call our Honolulu office right away. A quick adjustment is often all that is needed, and we are always happy to help.
Caring for Your New Crown
A crown is built to last, and good habits help it stay strong and beautiful for years. The tooth underneath still needs care, since decay can develop at the edges of a crown if plaque builds up. Here is how to protect your investment.
- Brush twice a day and floss daily, including around the crown
- Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or other very hard items
- Ask about a custom mouth guard if you grind your teeth at night
- Keep up with regular cleanings and exams at our Honolulu office

Request an AppointmentFrequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Hawaii Pacific Dental Group offers porcelain crowns in Honolulu that are matched to the color of your natural teeth.
You may need a crown if a tooth is cracked, worn, heavily decayed, or has had a root canal. Crowns are also used to hold bridges in place and to restore dental implants. Dr. Patel can examine your tooth and tell you whether a crown is the right choice.
With CEREC technology, many crowns can be designed, crafted, and placed in a single visit at our office. This means no second appointment and no temporary crown for most patients. Dr. Patel will let you know what to expect for your tooth at your consultation.
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with artificial teeth held in place by crowns on the neighboring teeth. This closes the gap and restores your ability to chew and smile. Dr. Patel can also replace missing teeth with dental implants topped with crowns or bridges.
Our crowns are made from dental porcelain, also called ceramic, which can be tinted to match your natural teeth and layered to reflect light like enamel. Depending on your needs, Dr. Patel may recommend eMax, BruxZir, or Empress crowns for beauty, strength, and durability.
Most patients are comfortable during the procedure because we numb the area when needed. Our Honolulu team works gently and explains each step, and sedation dentistry options are available for patients who feel nervous.
With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, dental crowns can last for many years. How long a crown lasts depends on factors such as your bite, habits like teeth grinding, and how well you care for the tooth underneath.
Many dental insurance plans cover part of the cost of crowns, though coverage varies. Hawaii Pacific Dental Group accepts most dental insurance, in and out of network, and our team will gladly verify your benefits and explain your costs before treatment begins.
